There are many transport options to choose from when holidaying in New Zealand. The best mode of transport is the one that suits your needs best.

Travelling around New Zealand via land is an excellent way to see this beautiful country of ours. A multitude of options are available - from rail systems and bus tours through to hiring rental cars and even buying your own vehicle.

New Zealand’s rail system is reasonably efficient. You can travel the length of New Zealand by rail, however the system does not go to all of the country’s extremities. New Zealand’s roading, for the population size of the country, is outstanding. State highways criss-cross the country and secondary highways are of a good standard. All main and secondary routes are sealed, with a large number of minor routes upgraded annually from metal to seal.

Motorhomes, vehicles and even motorbikes are available for rental the length and breadth of the country. You must have a current New Zealand or international driver’s licence in order to rent a vehicle. Please read all conditions of the contract carefully. There are a few roads in New Zealand where rental vehicles are not insured for driving – Ninety Mile Beach being one example. Also remember, New Zealanders drive on the left-hand side of the road, which is the same as the British system. So if you are not used to our conditions, please be careful when starting your holiday.

Aircraft travel in New Zealand is seen as a simple and efficient way to see the country. All cities have airports, and most towns have a landing strip. There are two main airlines that fulfil major domestic duties, Air New Zealand and Qantas, with quite a few regional-based airlines that fly to different parts of the country.

Flying is especially useful to those who are in a hurry and want to see a lot of the country. Many of the most beautiful places in New Zealand are either inaccessible or very hard to get to by land or sea. Helicopters and small aircraft are an ideal way to get into such places – whether as part of a scenic flight or flying from one destination to another.

New Zealand's aviation record as a safe place for air travel is up there with the best in the world, and there are strict guidelines that pilots have to adhere to when training and once fully licensed.

Most Kiwis live within 30 minutes of a beach so the ocean is an important part of our lives. Boats, yachts and ferries are second nature to most – whether for pleasure or as a mode of transport to get to work. New Zealand would have one of the highest boat-owning populations in the Western World. And if you don't own a boat, you know half a dozen people who do!

Being an island nation, ferries are an important mode of transportation for connecting the North and South Islands, as well as the South Island and Stewart Island. Throughout the county there are smaller ferry services such as those the Hokianga and Bay of Islands, and those that service the Hauraki Gulf Islands in Auckland.

For those on a budget or seeking adventure, kayaking and canoeing offer a unique travelling experience, especially around the Marlborough Sounds and Hauraki Gulf. Kayaking and canoeing are also popular on some of New Zealand’s lakes and more sedate rivers. It is important to check river and weather conditions if planning a kayaking/canoeing holiday.
